Institutions of higher education have faced many challenges in the last decade - competitiveness between academic institutions and with industry, competitive budgets and funding, technological changes and questions that arise regarding the relevance of academia in the world and in Israel. 

Institutions of higher education have faced many challenges in the last decade - competitiveness between academic institutions and with industry, competitive budgets and funding, technological changes and questions that arise regarding the relevance of academia in the world and in Israel. Increasing motivation to participate in  leadership roles and developing appropriate training, evaluation and reward processes are essential for the higher education system's ability to cope with the challenges and for leading academia in Israel toward excellence in research, teaching, human capital development and community contribution.

the research goals are:

  • To examine the current state of leadership and management in academia in Israel
  • To improve and strengthen leadership in academia in Israel

The research questions are:

  • What is the motivation of faculty members to take management and leadership roles in academia?
  • What are the decision-making processes in selecting people for senior positions?
  • What are the tools available which allow academic leaders to perform their role successfully? Are there trainings in the field?
  • Are there evaluation processes for senior academic leaders in institutions of higher education?
  • How can academic leadership be better rewarded? 

This is a joint research of  "Leadership in Academia"- The National Initiative for Senior Leadership Development in Higher Education and the Samuel Neaman Institute
