This work was commissioned by the National Space Committee, the National Council for R&D. The objective of this study is to provide data and information to all entities operating in the field of space R&D on their role and the status of personnel and infrastructure at their disposal, in order to help the NCRD formulate a national plan for the development, preservation, and promotion of R&D in the field of space. This work is a continuation of research carried out at the Neaman Institute over the years 2007 to 2009.
The study includes the following chapters:
- Data on the space industry around the world: market size and budgets.
- Mapping the centers of knowledge in the Israeli space industry: 41 leading companies in the industry, personnel, R&D activity, and collaborations.
- Mapping foci of knowledge (75 researchers and infrastructures) in the academe in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics, space engineering, and remote sensing.
- Summary of R&D output analysis in the field of space, such as scientific publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and space engineering.
- A review of activities in the field of space in the formal and informal education systems.
- A review of space-related activities in the government sector: The Defense Ministry and ISA.
- An analysis of the trends and characteristics of the space domain in Israel: an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the space industry in Israel, future directions, personnel training, and more.
The final report was presented and approved by the Committee members in September 2014.
