Book Launch Roundtable: Standing on Their Own by Prof. Meirav Aharon-Gutman

On March 10, 2025, the Samuel Neaman Institute hosted a special roundtable event to celebrate the launch of Prof. Meirav Aharon-Gutman’s new book, “Standing on Their Own: on Urban Sociology and Mizrahiyut in Israel”.

The book explores a range of topics including urban planning, ethnicity, Mizrahi identity, social mobility, and stratification.

Program

The event was opened by Prof. Shimon Marom, Director of the Samuel Neaman Institute, followed by a series of presentations by leading scholars in the relevant fields: Prof. (Emeritus) Haim Hazan, Prof. Nir Cohen, Prof. Karin Amit, Prof. Alona Nitzan-Shiftan, and Dr. Simcha Gueta-Bukobza.

The event concluded with remarks from Prof. Meirav Aharon-Gutman herself. The discussion and introductions were moderated by Dr. Reuven Gal.
