Ancient Vines and Negev Wine: The Past as a Promise for the Future

The Colloquium Series of the Samuel Neaman Institute

You are invited to a lecture in the Colloquium Series of the Samuel Neaman Institute. This series is dedicated to exploring the implications of social processes (culture, technology, ethics, geopolitics, and more) on higher education, research, and development.

Speaker: Prof. Guy Bar-Oz

The traditional Eretz Israel orchard includes dozens of heritage grapevine varieties that have been cultivated and adapted over generations to suit the region’s unique climatic conditions. These vines represent a rare “living and breathing” historical-archaeological find, with significant scientific importance in understanding their cultural heritage and preserving their rich biological diversity. In this lecture, we will present current research on ancient grapevine varieties in Israel and the Eastern Mediterranean. Exploring these heritage grape varieties offers valuable opportunities to discover previously unknown cultivars that were once cultivated and remain an integral part of Israel’s natural treasures.
