Shalom Salomon Wald, born in Italy in 1936, graduated at the University of Basle, Switzerland (studies of history and of philosophy under Karl Jaspers, and Ph.D. in economics, sociology and history of religion). From 1964 to 2001, he worked for the Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Western world's largest think tank. He specialized in educational, science and technology policies for many sectors (technology gaps, innovation, industry-university links, energy R&D in fossil fuels) and worked in close cooperation with the governments of the involved member countries. During his last years at the OECD, he initiated the Organization's program on biotechnology S&T and became Head of the Biotechnology Unit. He has also worked on projects for Israel, including a published report on "Science, Technology and Industry in Israel". He is at present Senior Fellow of the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute (JPPPI) in Jerusalem, which he joined at its foundation in 2001. His strategy report "China and the Jewish People: Old Civilizations in a New Era" was published in English (2004) and Hebrew (2005). His current work includes issues of thriving and decline of the Jewish people as a civilization, with a draft report presented in summer 2006, and links between science and technology and the Jewish people.
